When one million bushels of additional grain storage was needed to add to the existing one million at the Alton facility, concrete again came to the rescue. Using continuous slipform techniques around the clock, a staff of 103 workers completed the superstructure in five days. Slipping on the 140 foot tall structure was accomplished at a 1.3 feet per hour rate, with the need for the massive steel reinforcement to be inserted from the top of the slipform platform while work progressed. Engineering parameters for both mass concrete pours of the foundation and the special slip mix was met with ease by the producer. Compliments to the enormous coordination effort between the producer and contractor for this difficult project are in order.
