2006 Street Scape
Main Street Reconstruction - Langdon
![]()
Owner: City of Langdon, ND Supplied by: Concrete Premix Architect: ICON Group Engineer: Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. Contractor: Lindberg Brothers
Along with solving problems of a crumbling underground utility system, the City of Langdon and their engineer, Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc., fought through financial obstacles to get the eye-catching new street project constructed in concrete. Problems started when the funding agency recommended the use of asphalt surfacing for the project because of the lowest construction cost. But the local citizens and City Leaders had a different view of what was needed to revitalize their central business district. So in spite of the financial issues, the engineer conclusively provided evidence through a Life Cycle Cost Analysis that concrete pavement had the lowest cost in the long run. With this recommendation, the City chose to pay the difference in cost and secure the long-lasting and aesthetically appealing concrete street and a stunningly effective decorative concrete streetscape.
Lindberg Brothers combined with Scofield Systems to provide the colored and textured sidewalks, cross-walks, and park-like plazas and benches on street corners. ICON Architects were able to blend color and texture with masonry features to create uniqueness in the downtown streetscape improvement. These features, combined with enhanced lighting, landscaping, banners, and a clock tower on the main intersection, can confidently make claim to a street improvement/streetscape project unsurpassed by any community anywhere in North Dakota.
Today, the City of Langdon has a business district that it can be proud of. The infrastructure has been updated to meet the City’s present and future needs. The street and sidewalks have been completely rebuilt, and the streetscape is in place. Since completion of the project, a new interest in celebrating the downtown is taking hold. Business owners are feeling the momentum and are initiating remodeling of stores and storefronts. Downtown Langdon is once again new, vibrant and on-the-grow. Not surprising considering the wonderful destination available for the local citizens and rural patrons on Main Street Langdon.
