2008 Bike Paths & Trails

Fargo Multi-Use Trails

Construction of new additions to the Fargo bike and pedestrian trail system has been continuous in recent years with a project scheduled almost every year. The trail project completed this past year was bigger than most with a construction contract for $780,000. The project’s scope included completion of a 12 foot wide trail and landscaping effort in the Oak Grove area. In order to affect a park like atmosphere, the trail was constructed in a serpentine fashion here, with additional effort to create gardens and park seating. The second part of the project followed an alignment adjacent to Drain No. 27.

Northern Improvement Co. was selected as the project constructor. Coping with a busy construction schedule, they were able to divert construction equipment and man-power from projects in Jamestown, Minot and the Fargo I-29 project to complete the project on-target. A slipform paver was effectively used to construct all portions of the trail including the curve-linear portions for maximum productivity and smooth ride.

Ames Sand & Gravel was challenged in getting the ready mix to the paver on many parts of the project, especially in the section of the Drain 27 work away from streets and roads. In some cases, ready mix trucks unloaded mix into the buckets of track-hoes which moved the mix to the track ahead of the paver. Through innovation and hard work, access challenges were successfully overcome.

The portion of the project cost dedicated to garden landscaping amounted to about $70,000. The remaining portions of the project cost went into paving 3,000 linear feet of trail in the Oak Grove section and 10,000 linear feet in the Drain 27 portion.

The City of Fargo is serious about their bike and pedestrian paths. They have chosen concrete as the material of choice for every trail project in recent memory. Congratulations on another great project.
