2008 Bridge Winner
West City Park Bridge
The West City Park Bridge is located near City Park in Valley City, ND, crossing the Sheyenne River. The original false arch structure, built in 1929, needed rehabilitation or replacement due to its deteriorated superstructure and narrow roadway width. The bridge was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places primarily due to its unique false arch design and for its aesthetic value.
KL&J completed an Environmental Assessment to evaluate rehabilitation and replacement alternatives to address the bridge’s deficiencies. Extensive public involvement, including public meetings, project newsletters, newspaper articles, and public presentations resulted in specific public comments that helped shape the course of the Environmental Assessment. Project issues include potential impacts to 4(f) and 6(f) protected properties, historic residential properties, and several historic districts. The existing bridge was replaced with a new false arch bridge reminiscent of the existing historic structure. Precast concrete beams were the basis of the superstructure.
Much of the credit for the detailed forming for the rails and arches goes to the experienced and efficient carpenters working for the contractor, Swingen Construction. All detail forms were constructed from hand- cut and assembled lumber. The final result speaks to the accuracy and attention to detail required of this special bridge duplication effort.
Total concrete used on the $2.1 million bridge was 1377 cubic yards. After demolition in March, the deck was poured in August. The project was completed on schedule in spite of intermittent high river flows affecting work progress.
