Two concrete pavement projects were toured. The first project was the US Hwy. 10 Unbonded Overlay project near Hawley and was visited in the morning. The I-29 Fargo project was visited in the afternoon. Participants for the Hwy. 10 project were as follows:

Objective of the field trip was to develop an understanding of the use of concrete pavements for maintenance type work for highway improvements by MNDOT. The Hwy. 10 Unbonded Overlay (UBOL) Project consisted of a doweled 7 inch concrete pavement constructed in lieu of a structural asphalt overlay over the existing 40 year old concrete pavement. Concrete was selected because of the superior life cycle cost comparison to the asphalt overlay option. In addition, many features of the UBOL type project are similar to whitetopping.

All field trip participants initially met at the Hawley Community Center. Matt Zeller provided a PowerPoint Presentation on UBOL projects to identify the features provided in this project and other project options. Following the UBOL presentation, Matt also provided a presentation on whitetopping design & construction experiences in Minnesota.

Discussions during & following the presentations included ride/smoothness standards for the UBOL project, payment through square yard-cubic yard pricing structure, adjustment of pavement grade, jointing patterns, characteristics of debonding asphalt layer, provision for culvert replacement, shoulder features, curing compounds, dowel basket anchorage, dowel bond breaker characteristics, traffic handling and project schedule, paving production, stringline controls, and concrete mix characteristics. Formal discussions were followed by a trip to the concrete plant followed by visitation to the paver train. Informally, discussions were noted on possible ND projects with characteristics appropriate for the Concrete UBOL technology.

Interstate 29 project at Fargo visited in afternoon.
